Coast and Islands Orienteering Week
Orienteering Adventure along the North West Coast of Scotland
Sunday 25th to Friday 30th July 2021
Coast and Islands 2021 is now FULL! We are operating a waiting list, see further down for a link to join.
If you want to keep up to date on news on Coast and Islands 2022 please signup below.
We’re also selling paper copies of the maps from 2021 after the event for £5 each. If you want to buy copies please send us a message. They can be picked up at the Scottish 6 Days or posted.
Masterplan Adventure invite you to an orienteering adventure along the North West coast of Scotland.
Travelling through one of the wildest and most beautiful parts of Europe you’ll orienteer on areas never used for orienteering before. To get a flavour of the landscape checkout the video below.
Taking place before the Scottish 6 Days located around Lochaber, it provides the perfect opportunity to train before the big competition but with plenty of time left to experience what the NW coast and islands have to offer.
You’ll begin in Ullapool, which at 1500 residents is one of the largest towns in this remote part of Scotland! Then you’ll move southwards through Gairloch, Torridon and finishing with the first ever orienteering event on the Isle of Skye. Which in Highland terms is near to the Scottish 6 Days event centre in Fort William.
Where logistics allow we the orienteering will take place in the morning or late afternoon, to allow you to make the most of exploring this amazing part of the world!
The organisation will be low key due to the location, number of people we can accommodate and to keep costs reasonable.
Unusually you will also have to enter all the events.
The Specifics – we will update things as more information becomes available. Updated 25/3/2021

The long technical course will generally be planned to be a middle distance (35 minute winning time) for Men’s Elite. And the short about 60% of that distance.

Cost for the week
Standard Entry (reopened 29/12/2020)
– Adults £120
– Juniors/Students £60
Groups
* Only space left in group 2
When you enter you’ll have to pick between the 2 Groups which determine when your start time will be (according to the table above). This has been necessary due to parking arrangements (there isn’t much parking along that coast for 100 cars!).
Accommodation
We would advise moving accommodation during the week as the distance from Ullapool to Armadale via the coast road is 150 miles or 4 hours driving! It should be possible to stay 2 nights at each place which increases accommodation options and is a little bit less stressful!
What do we recommend? That you spend Sunday and Monday night in Ullapool, Tuesday and Wednesday in Shieldaig and Thursday and Friday night in Kyle or on Skye.
How could Covid Restrictions impact on the event?
Hopefully restrictions are a thing of the past by next summer. If they’re not we’re hopeful about being able to run the event anyway due to the small numbers of participants involved. If we do have to cancel it we will reschedule the event for a future time.
We are also offering individuals the option to take out extra insurance through the entry system in case you can’t attend due to covid or other reasons, see full details when you enter.
Questions? Contact the coordinator Chris Smithard here.
Ready to enter?
All 200 places have now been taken. We are operating a waiting list in case any pulls out. Joining the waiting list is free and does not commit you if a place does become available.
