Coast and Islands Orienteering Week
Orienteering Adventures along the West Coast of Scotland
2024 Knapdale Forest
Information
Wednesday 17th to Friday 19th July 2024
After the success of Coast and Islands 2021, 2022, 2023, we’re back for 2024. This time we head to Knapdale, not so far from the start of the 2022 event, and not too far from the World Champs (or at least as close as you can get and be on the west coast.
Program
- Wednesday 17th July – Crinan
- Thursday 18th July – Achnamara
- Friday 19th July – Achnamara
Terrain
Knapdale is a special place, with long, narrow sea-lochs and islands, all with forested shorelines. There are a number of inland lochs within the forest, supporting a thriving population of busy beavers. The forest is vast, with high-quality orienteering terrain throughout and scope for many more maps and events. It includes large areas of birch and Atlantic-oak woodland, however we are not using these in order to avoid summer bracken (but watch out for future spring events!). Instead, we have chosen areas of mature plantation. Although man-made, this terrain has remained untouched since planting and has a dark, primaeval feel. It has never been thinned or felled and lacks any of the usual brashings and vehicle-ruts. It is generally fast and clean underfoot, remarkably so for Scotland. Visibility is not high, especially in areas mapped pale green, where there are low dead branches (which are mostly rotten and easily broken). It has plenty of contour detail, including steep, chunky ridges, all with a strong NE-SW trend.
Don’t miss this opportunity to be the first to orienteer in Scotland’s Last Great Forest!
